On the poster, Nat Turner (Nate Parker) has an American flag noose around his neck. Whoa! There are layers to this because this release also happened following the police brutality tragedies that ended in the murders of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling.  I’m so proud of Nate for being uncompromising in the making and messaging of this film. If you didn’t guess from the title and subject of the film, this poster unflinchingly puts in your face the tormented history of this nation and the enslaved people that built this country. Slaves. Literally. Built. The. White House. And the booming economy of the South was due to the stolen labor and contributions of black people. The Birth of the Nation which shares the title with one of the most racist films in film history is about the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner. Just Another Girl on the IRT…is a classic piece of black cinema. It’s always interesting to go back and watch a film that you haven’t seen for years. That was the case with this film. It was originally released in ‘92 and oh, how I love my '90s cinema. Chantel, the main character of the film (pictured above) is determined to make something of herself. She’s going places and doesn’t mind letting everyone know. However, she ends up hitting some road blocks along the way. I loved this film when I initially watched it, but after seeing it again several years later I noticed a few small things that I won’t mention because I want you to watch it and form your own opinions. It hurt to see small children suffering from something that was preventable, but grateful to see all of the documentary’s subjects in full recovery. It also made me think of America’s health care crisis.
